We all know that what we eat can help us prevent certain illnesses. We see on television all the time about people who are ill because of their diet. Well, maybe we should say lack of a diet. These people tend to be at risk of disease because they don't have the right things to eat. When people think of health and prevention, I think some of them think about pills and their doctor. To some people, they think these are the only tools they have. That isn't true. In fact, there are more important tools for you to use.Our diet is important not just for our appearance. A good diet will decrease your chance of getting cancer and other diseases. I know that it is hard to believe that just what we eat can play such a big role, but it does.

Think of it like this. As the old saying goes, you are what you eat. That is true. Your body needs many things to survive. Over the long term you realize that diet is more important than ever before. I probably just like you have known many people who have had cancer. Also, we see on television all the time famous people getting cancer. A lot of these people don't smoke. They don't do drugs, rarely drink alcohol.

Why are they getting cancer? I'm sure some of it has to do with genetics and some of it has to do with pollution. While up to 1/3 of it, is due to diet. That's right, they get cancer because what they eat. Perhaps it could be said better by saying, what they don't eat. Let's talk about some of the foods you should eat to prevent cancer and other illness. This is an important article, so I would bookmark it and come back when you have any questions.

Apples. It was once said, an apple a day will keep the doctor away. This is true. These are loaded with vitamins A and C. They also help lower cholesterol and they lower your chance of getting cancer.

Broccoli. Just because a former president didn't eat his, doesn't mean you should avoid yours. Actually, this is one of my favorite veggies. One serving has 97% of your vitamin C for the day. Also, it is a good source of calcium.

Oranges. Not only do these babies taste good, but they are good for you as well. They do help in preventing colds and flues. They also help prevent many forms of cancer. They are one of my favorite fruits.

Onions. Half an onion a day will lower your cholesterol. Also, if you ever notice how you tear up when you cut an onion. They are good for people with asthma or other breathing problems. They open up the head so to speak. Also they fight cancer such as stomach cancer. You might not know it, but onions were once believed to be sent from god. They were believed to make people live longer and healthier. One thing you might not know is, onions reduce your risk of heart attacks and strokes. Maybe there is some truth to all of that god stuff after all.

Carrots. Carrots have beta carotene which has been known for a long time to fight cancer. Remember when you were a kid and were told to eat your carrots or you will go blind? Well, that isn't true, but they are good for the eyes.

Salmon. Out of all the fatty fish, this one is best for you. It contains omega-3 fat, which is very good for your heart. People who eat salmon at least once per week are said to have a 50% lower chance of heart attack.

Beans. You know these little devils. I used to eat them the night before going to school so I could fart all day long. Not only are these good for prostate cancer, but they also are a good source of fiber.

Seaweed. No, I don't mean a joint that you smoke while at sea. I mean the stuff that comes from the ocean. This is loaded with iodine and other things. It has calcium, magnesium, and iron. This is very good for fighting cancer.

Lemons. All you have to do is go to the supermarket and see how many lemon flavored cold remedies there are to see the potential of this citrus fruit. Lemons are a great way to prevent a cold, the punch of vitamin C will keep you healthy. It is also good for sore throats.

Garlic. What doesn't this stuff do? Well, while it might not be a cure all like once believed. It does prevent almost everything under the sun. From heart disease to cancer, this is great stuff. I suggest that you study up on garlic so that you understand all of the good things it does. It would take an article the length of a book to go into great detail.

There you have it. Though I'm sure you are some what surprised, I'm sure that you will be able to absorb all the info in this article. If you can't, just bookmark it and read where you left off.

Women and the Monthly Menstrual Cycle

Posted By: Admin - On: May 14, 2012
Having a period or menstruating is said to be puberty's biggest event. It is a normal and healthy part of being a woman that young girls should be prepared for rather than be terrified. Women began their menstruation cycle during puberty, normally at age 12 or 13 but can start anytime between 8 and 16.

The menstrual period, also known as menstruation or menses, is just one part of the menstrual cycle. This is a 28-day long process that happens in all healthy women who are not yet on their menopause. The menstrual cycle involves all the aspects of the woman's reproductive system such as the uterus, cervix, ovaries, fallopian tubes and vagina. The menstrual cycle is the body's way of preparing women for pregnancy. A cycle is generally more or less 28 days long and starts on the first day of a period. Though, a cycle may range anywhere from 23 to 35 days.

Each month, the reproductive system prepares for the fertilization of a woman's eggs and the development of a fetus. The process is conducted by hormones, mainly by estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

Basically, the menstrual cycle have four phases. Menstruation or having your period is the first phase. Each month the uterus prepares for an embryo by thickening its lining with tissue and blood. When an egg is released without being fertilized, then the uterus will shed this lining through the small opening of the cervix and passes out of the body through the vagina. The menstrual flow is a mixture made up of blood, mucus, and body cells. The flow might be red or quite dark, and may include some clumps or clots. Periods normally last about three to five days.

The second phase is called pre-ovulation phase. This happens after a period ends. At this time the ovaries start to prepare another egg, or ovum, for release in the fallopian tubes.

Ovulation is the third phase, where the egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tubes. If the egg becomes fertilized by a sperm cell, it attaches to the uterine wall and a fetus will begin to develop. The ovulation phase typically occurs 14 days before the start of the next period.

The fourth and final phase is the premenstrual phase. If the egg is not fertilized, the thickened lining of the uterus is shed and a new menstrual cycle starts all over again.

A period may vary every month and differs from one woman to another. It can either be light, moderate, or heavy. Although most menstrual periods last from three to five days, anywhere from two to seven days is still considered normal. However during the first few years after having menstruation, periods may be very irregular.

Women stop having their periods when they reached menopause, usually around the age of 50. Menopause refers to the stage when a woman is no longer ovulating or producing eggs. As a result she can no longer become pregnant. Like menstruation, menopause also varies from woman to woman and may even take some years to occur.

Andropause - Fact or Fiction

Posted By: Admin - On: May 10, 2012
One of the biggest controversies gripping today-s medical world is the subject of andropause. Doctors are taking sides with one school of thought or another and furiously debate at conventions and in papers if this male version of the menopause exists, what symptoms should be taken into account during the diagnose process and what treatments are effective. There is no consensus at the moment and the search still goes on for an explanation that fits all the facts.

-The determinants of "aging" and of "life expectancy" extend from genetic and molecular determinants to the increasingly powerful forces of environmental, economical, technological and cultural globalization.- (Professor Bruno Lunenfeld, Bar-Ilan University, Israel)

Since the 1940s, the term andropause has been used to describe a condition that was considered to be similar to the female menopause. The blame for triggering this condition was laid on falling levels of the testosterone hormone from around the age of 45 onwards. Andropause was also considered to be the source of many problems faced by men past their prime, such as weight gain, heart disorders, mood swings, depression and plummeting libido.

-Our results show that testosterone has a key role in the central and peripheral modulation of erectile function --.- (Doctor Andrea Garolla, University of Padua, Italy)-

However, the condition is highly debated, with doctors doubting it even exists. The main hurdle in agreeing upon a definition of andropause is the fact that there is no clear physical symptom that could be used to diagnose the condition. While the end of menstruation is the classic tell-tale for menopause, men display no such universal symptom that could clue doctors to what-s going on. That-s why the medical world is still polarized between the two camps that argue back and forth over this issue.

Still, the medical controversy has not stopped men from looking for a way to stop or reverse the hormonal changes brought by andropause. Nathan Church, Product Manager with Lativio, says-

-Although, I am not a medical doctor, I know that increasingly men have bought our products as a result of a series of problems. These problems include loss of libido and reduced ability of on demand erections. I can only speak from my experience with our customers that their symptoms do point to a condition described as Andropause.-

As we can see from this quote, men are not going to sit idle until experts agree that there is a problem. The natural products market has a wide range of products aimed at bringing back some the youthful feeling to aging men. While taking the problem into one-s hands involves a certain amount of risk, it seems that many men are perfectly ready to take that risk, especially since the prize is the spark of life.

The Coconut Diet

Posted By: Admin - On: May 03, 2012
Some people are willing to sell anything and this is why some bad ideas are actually launched on the market, much to the dismay of unsuspecting customers who are duped by the hype and advertising. One such bad idea is the Coconut Diet, which is yet another of those diets that add some kind of miracle ingredient to a strict eating program and hope that everything turns out great. The magic ingredient in this case is the coconut oil and its metabolism boosting capacity. It seems that coconut oil can be rapidly burnt by the body, despite the fact that it is rich in saturated fats.

This diet is in fact a regular low-carb diet, very similar to Atkins. During the first stage of the diet, users are not allowed to eat any kind of carbohydrates and must do with lean foods, such as eggs, nuts, cheese, fish, chicken, turkey and up to 10 glasses of water per day. They also have to swallow 2-3 tablespoons of coconut oil per day. The first stage lasts for three weeks, only to be followed by an optional detox stage. This stage lasts for 4 weeks and focuses on cleansing the liver, kidneys, gallbladder and colon through certain interesting means (such as drinking water mixed with lemon juice and olive oil).

The third stage of the diet is the reintroduction of carbohydrates in the daily eating plan. Starting with fruit, wholegrains and potatoes, the dieter is once more allowed to eat carbs. It is assumed that the dieter has lost more than 10 pounds by this point and still maintaining a weight loss pace of 1-2 pounds per week. The fourth stage of the diet means that even more carbohydrates are added to the eating plan, while still drinking coconut oil.

Unfortunately, the person behind this diet provides no sound explanation for the alleged positive influence of coconut oil on weight loss. While it-s true that coconut oil helps regulate the thyroid gland, it has far too much saturated fat to be healthy. Furthermore, it-s not very clear whether the coconut oil plays any kind of role in this diet, since the weight loss can easily be ascribed to the strict -no carbohydrates- eating plan. Most dieting experts and dietitians agree that access to saturated fats should be limited during diets, so it-s pretty strange to see one that claims the opposite.
